Hundreds turn out for Quinnipiac University’s ‘Big Event’ for Greater New Haven

There was no sleeping in Saturday morning for hundreds of Quinnipiac University students who instead spent the time helping improve sites in Hamden and the region.

The students took part in the university’s sixth annual Big Event, where they go out in the community and spend three hours sprucing up different sites. The event started 31 years ago at Texas A&M University and this year, 1,000 Quinnipiac students took part at sites including Bear Path and Church Street schools, the Hamden Senior Center and Miller Library, the Farmington Canal trail, and Edgewood Park and Criscoulo Park in New Haven.

“I love helping and volunteering,” said John Midy, a graduate MBA student studying health care management who was helping to spruce up the yard in front of Bear Path School Saturday morning. “There’s always someone in need and by helping one another, we can make life easier for a lot of folks — and more beautiful, too.”

Midy said it’s the fourth year he has been involved with the Big Event.
