Connecticut College production raises $15,000 for Safe Futures

Students at Connecticut College raised $15,000 for Safe Futures, a local shelter serving survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence, through two spring performances of a new theatrical production.

“As Told by Vaginas,” a collection of 18 monologues written and performed by students, addressed body image, sexuality, sexual health, sexual assault and relationships. The performance was created after student producers and directors who were organizing the College’s annual production of “The Vagina Monologues” decided that the well-known episodic play was outdated. Students said they needed a more relevant production that would reflect current attitudes on campus and off.

“We decided that we needed a more inclusive and contemporary production that better articulates the experiences of women today,” said producer Bettina Weiss ’15, who noted that the production represented the experiences of women across race, class and sexual orientation. “Some of the language was specific to Connecticut College, such as references to buildings on campus or our Conn vocabulary. But the content of the show itself was universal.”

The “As Told by Vaginas” leadership team presented the $15,000 donation to Cathy Zeiner, the executive director of Safe Futures, at the organization’s annual Light the Way fundraising breakfast in early May.
