Annual mentoring event partners UNH business students, Barnard middle schoolers

Twenty University of New Haven management students met with 40 city middle school students to give direction, advice and encouragement in an annual mentoring event last month, according to a press release from UNH Management Professor Tony Carter.

The event between UNH’s Management Department and Barnard Magnet Middle School in New Haven took place April 29.

The UNH mentors also developed a friendship with the middle schoolers, Carter said in the release.

“It’s great to partner with these students and be a resource to them,“ UNH management student Jessica Humire said.

The activity exposes all students to the practical realities of today’s very competitive and volatile business world, Carter said. It also gives UNH students the satisfaction of serving as mentors, and Barnard students a chance to make friends in the process.

The event has taken place every year for the past eight years, and Carter and Marjorie Drucker, who teaches at Barnard, have worked together to build a strong partnership between the schools, Carter said.
